At age 5 Steven set into place two foundation stones, qualifying for the Gifted and Talented Program at Comanche Primary School (Kindergarten through 5th grade) and racing.  His first race in a basic go-kart was all it took, and his many honors, trophies, plaques and awards reflect Steven’s passion for racing and commitment to his education.

School and Home Life

           The Abbeys are always busy doing a multitude of activities.  Steven’s has three brothers, his mom is a pharmacist and his dad is a vet.  They live on a farm in Comanche, Texas and approach everything as a family.

In addition to Steven’s daily chores, studies and racing schedule he has made time for other sports…soccer from ages 5-9, baseball from 5–12, basketball from 8-11, football from 11-12, and competed in the 200 meter, 800 meter and mile race for the Comanche Junior High track team.  Further, throughout his schooling, Steven has maintained an overall A/B average. 

Steven’s involvement in Future Farmers of America, 3rd through 8th grades, occurred as a natural progression from doing his chores on the Abbey Farm.  In 2005-2006 he was the Comanche Junior FFA President and Comanche FFA Star Junior Member. Many competition ribbons and belt buckles have been added to the “Abbey Trophy Room” for showing his beef heifers, pigs and goats.  

Science and engineering are of particular interest to Steven and have resulted in numerous school, regional and statewide awards.  In 6th grade “Aerodynamics of Races Cars” was his project winning him 1st place qualifying him for the Regional Science Fair. Steven placed 3rd in the engineering category further qualifying him for the state science fair at Texas Tech University in Lubbock.  Steven was the first 6th grader from Comanche to qualify for the state science fair. 

In 7th grade he qualified again for the Regional Science Fair with his project on thermal conductivity of different metals and won 4th place in the engineering division.  Steven’s science team also qualified for the Regional Science Fair with their project on car wrecks and which type of barrier is safer for a head-on collision.  The team placed 3rd in the physical science category qualifying them for the state science fair in San Antonio, Texas.  Steven also successfully competed in the UIL academic competitions in 7th and 8th grades.

In 2006 he competed on the Science Olympiad Team at the state competition at Texas A & M University.  Steven turned 14 this year.


 

The Race Track
            

Steven’s first race at age 5 was in a 5 hp live axle under 11 class go-kart driven at the Cowtown Speedway, an oval dirt track located in Kennedale, Texas.   At age 8 he started racing on asphalt in the INEX Bandolero Bandits division at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth.   In addition to racing at TMS, Steven competed at tracks all over Texas and was invited to the Bandolero Nationals at Atlanta Motor Speedway.  Steven finished 5th in INEX Texas Bandolero Bandits points in 2000.

2001 and 2002 were successful years for Steven.  He continued to race throughout the state, finishing 3rd in Texas State Bandolero Bandits points and 5th in National points.  Steven was also the 2001 Texas Motor Speedway “Hard Luck” award winner as voted by other Texas INEX members.  In 2002 he finished 7th in the Texas State Bandolero Bandits points.

In 2003 Steven began running a Toyota Corolla in the Texas Junior Mini-stock class on dirt oval tracks and continues to race in this class.  He also ran as a Bandolero Bandit finishing 5th in Texas points, 10th in National points and finished 4th at the Bandolero Nationals race at Orlando Speedworld.

Steven won the Texas State Bandolero Bandits points, finished 11th in the National INEX Bandolero Bandits points in 2004 and finished 4th at the Bandolero Nationals race in Grand Bay, Alabama.  He also began running a few races in the INEX Legend Cars in the Semi-Pro division.  Prior to competing in the Legends Nationals at the “Bullring” of the Las Vegas Motor Speedway Steven had raced his legends car twice.

2005 was another busy year for Steven.  He raced in 15 different states winning the 2005 INEX Legends Touring Series Championship in the Semi-Pro division, competed in the Legends National race in Lake Erie, PA, had 9 feature wins at 7 different tracks and placed 3rd in the Semi-Pro Texas State points.

INEX moved Steven in 2006 into the Pro division of the Legend Car program.  This allowed him to compete with the best Legends drivers across the nation.  Steven returns to Lowe’s Motor Speedway this year to compete in the Legends Summer “Shootout” in Concord, NC from June 13 through August 8.

Winters Series 2006-2007 finds Steven finishing ahead of his brother Dean in the 6th place position in the Pro Legends Division at Texas Motor Speedway, Ft. Worth, Texas.

2007 Steven will compete in both the Lowe's Motor Speedway Summer Shootout and the Texas Motor Speedway Summer Stampede.
